Crying on Your Wedding Day
Watery eyes on your wedding day might be the last thing you want, with everyone staring at the mascara dripping down your face. However some cultures suggest it’s in fact a good omen to shed tears on your big day so you have no more left to shed throughout the marriage. Makes sense, doesn’t it?
Crying for a Month
Some suggest crying on your wedding day.. others suggest crying an entire month before! For the Tujia people, an ethnic minority in parts of China, brides must practice crying an hour each day on the run up to the wedding! It is said to bring good fortune to big events.
Blackening the Betrothed
Our Scottish brides may be more familiar with this bizarre tradition! How would you like to be kidnapped, covered in gunk and then tied to a tree? We’ve been told some friends in the more rural parts of the Scottish highlands enjoy dumping dirt, goo and gunk on the couple and tying them to a tree! Allegedly, this is done so that the betrothed can prove they’re ready for anything.
Sausage in the Garden
Fancy a fry up on your wedding morning? Just go and dig the sausage out the garden! Yes that’s right. Some suspicious couples believe that burying a sausage in your garden the night before your wedding brings glorious skies for the festivities! Now we’d heard of burying the bourbon before the big day, but a sausage was something new.
On the contrary whilst some chase away the rain, others welcome it! In some traditions across the globe, rain on your wedding day signifies good luck, fertility and a fruitful marriage.
Stay Away from the Pig
What comes before the sausage? The pig! Some silly folklore states that it is bad luck to see a pig running across the road on your wedding day. I don’t know about you, but it’s not often I see many hogs roaming the streets, just make sure to avoid any farms en route!
