Greek Goddess Persephone; Goddess of Vegetation
Persephone; Greek goddess of vegetation and wife of Hades, together they ruled the underworld. A deity who was worshipped throughout ancient Greece, Persephone was often depicted in Greek art. One of her most famous stories marked the beginning of her life as goddess of the underworld, as well as how the ancient Greeks explained winter.
Whilst Persephone was out picking flowers one day, the dark God Hades was captivated by her stunning beauty and kidnapped her to the underworld. When it was brought to her mother, Demeter’s attention, she searched all the Earth and abandoned her role tending to the crops in desperation of finding Persephone.
However throughout this time, Persephone had grown to love Hades, who treated her with compassion and loved her as his Queen. When Persephone was ultimately found by Zeus, the wily Hades presented her with a pomegranate of which she ate a single kernel. This single kernel compelled her to return to the underworld and reside with Hades for one third of each year, resulting the winter season, where no crops would grow due to Demeter’s sorrow.
